Michael Thompson

Founder & Partner & Notary Public

Michael Thompson

Michael founded the firm in 2011. He holds an LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Strathclyde, alongside an honours degree in Pharmacology and Immunology, and spent ten years in the semi-conductor industry before entering law.

He has conducted over 1000 civil proofs in family actions, and has led numerous high-profile Fatal Accident Inquiries and complex Executry disputes.

Johnny Thompson

Johnny Thompson

Johnny holds an LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Strathclyde, and has worked at the firm since it opened. He shares the majority of the firm's appeal, proof and debate work with Michael Thompson.

An experienced civil litigator, he has represented clients at 28 separate Sheriff Courts across Scotland, including the Outer Hebrides and Shetland, as well as the Sheriff Appeal Court.

Abby Connor

Abby Connor

Abby is a Senior Associate within the firm after graduating from the University of Strathclyde in 2015 and completing the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice in 2016. Abby has extensive experience in various family law matters and in particular, divorce and cases involving the welfare of children. She appears regularly at Sheriff Courts across Scotland in relation to these matters.

She has also gained exposure to a wide range of complex family law matters and other civil matters during her time at the firm. Abby is our Training Manager, whereby she assists our trainee Solicitors, and was recently promoted to Practice Manager of our Coatbridge office. Abby has a certification in trauma-informed law from the Law Society of Scotland. Abby is also a court appointed Children Welfare Reporter.

Shelley Grant

Shelley Grant

Shelley is a Senior Associate at the firm and an experienced family law solicitor, regularly handling a broad range of family law matters in courts across Scotland. She has particular expertise in cases involving children, divorce, financial provision, cohabitation claims, separation agreements, DVLA appeals, and other civil law issues.

Shelley also has a strong interest in children's rights and human rights, and has recently graduated with a Master's Degree in Human Rights Law at the University of Strathclyde. Shelley is also a court appointed Children Welfare Reporter.

Ainslie Bennett

Ainslie Bennett

Ainslie is a Senior Solicitor who joined the firm in 2020. A Solicitor and Notary Public, Ainslie attained her LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Strathclyde before completing her traineeship with the firm. During her time on the Diploma at the University of Strathclyde, Ainslie was awarded the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow Prize for Civil Litigation.

Ainslie has a keen interest in family law and represents a wide range of clients in family law disputes including Divorce, Residence and Contact cases. Ainslie has experience appearing in various different courts across Scotland in a range of family and civil matters, and has conducted successful family law proofs.

Claudia Reilly

Claudia Reilly

Claudia is a Senior Solicitor within our firm after attaining her LLB (Hons) Degree from the University of Strathclyde in 2016. She then completed the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice in 2017 whilst working as a paralegal with the firm. The experience of working in a paralegal capacity enabled Claudia to accelerate the traineeship requirements.

Claudia has a keen interest in family law. She has progressed a variety of cases, including divorce, residence and contact cases. Claudia also has experience instructing Junior Counsel in the Court of Session in negligence and family law matters.

Stephanie McCarron

Stephanie McCarron

Stephanie graduated from Strathclyde University, obtaining her Diploma in Legal Practice in 2019, and qualified as a Solicitor and Notary Public in 2023 after completing her traineeship at a small firm with experience across civil litigation, conveyancing, private client and criminal law.

She has extensive knowledge of court procedures and regularly appears in sheriff courts throughout Scotland, advocating for clients in complex and often stressful family law matters, both inside and outside the courtroom. Her approach is direct and practical, focused on helping clients find effective solutions.

Gabriela Sommerville

Gabriela Sommerville

Gabriela qualified as a solicitor in March 2024, having obtained her Diploma from the University of Strathclyde. She trained in various areas of law, including family law, child protection, criminal defence and civil litigation. Gabriela represents a wide range of clients in family law disputes, including residence/contact disputes and divorce.

Gabriela regularly appears at Sheriff Court level throughout Scotland. She is motivated to provide clients with positive outcomes in often complex and stressful situations.

Jordan McGuinness

Jordan McGuinness

Jordan is a recently qualified solicitor at Thompson Family Law. In his first year of training, he gained significant court experience, including conducting a Diet of Debate and two diets of proof, and has since appeared in over 25 sheriff courts across Scotland. Outside of work, he enjoys going to the football and spending time at the gym.

Liam Thompson

Liam Thompson

Liam is a second year Trainee Solicitor within the firm, having previously worked as a Legal Assistant beginning in 2020. He attained his LLB (First Class Honors) Degree from the University of Stirling in 2024, and his Diploma in Professional Legal Practice in 2025 from the University of Edinburgh.

Liam has a keen interest in Family Law, and has also gained a wealth of exposure to a variety of other civil matters. He has gained significant experience in court, having appeared in over 20 Sheriff Courts throughout Scotland, and is now at the advanced stage of conducting Diets of Proof since commencing his traineeship.

Paul Usher

Trainee Solicitor & Notary Public

Paul Usher

Paul joined Thompson Family Law in April 2025. Paul is from Inverness and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Abertay in Dundee and Diploma at the University of Aberdeen. After the Diploma, Paul worked as an Advisor in the Inverness, Badenoch and Strathspey, Citizens Advice Bureau. Outside of work, Paul enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, walking his dog, and travelling.
