Starting September 2026, solicitors providing legal aid in Scotland will see a 13% increase in their fees. This adjustment is part of a broader initiative by the Scottish Government to bolster the legal aid system, ensuring that individuals have access to necessary legal support.
In addition to the fee increase, the government is introducing funding for up to 40 legal aid traineeships and offering digital support to help law firms acquire technology that assists trainees in their work and court appearances. These measures aim to strengthen the legal profession and improve the delivery of legal services across the country.
Minister for Victims and Community Safety, Siobhian Brown, emphasized the significance of these reforms, stating, "Access to justice is a fundamental right and we want to ensure people get the help they need and that there are solicitors available to provide it." This commitment underscores the government's dedication to a legal aid system that is both effective and sustainable.
Since 2019, cumulative fee increases have totaled just over 25%, surpassing inflation rates. The most recent rise in April 2023 brought total additional funding to £31 million since 2019. The upcoming 13% uplift continues this pattern of investment, demonstrating ongoing support for legal aid providers.
At Thompson Family Law, we recognize the importance of these developments. The increase in legal aid fees and the additional support for traineeships and technology are vital steps toward ensuring that solicitors can continue to offer high-quality legal assistance to those in need. We remain committed to providing compassionate and practical legal support to our clients, upholding the principle that access to justice should be available to all.
